Whats the major muscle - 02-01-2010, 12:04 PM

In your legs that really determine the flexibility of your kicks and the height, Is it your hamstrings or your hip flexors ect ect. Thank You

Hello again don't be discouraged if your question is not answered -). Paul and the knowledgeable members who can give the right answers might be busy. I suggest you browse the Kick Specific Technique Training and Discussion Forum. I believe the same question was posted and discussed in there. Since you are interested in high kicks maybe you should also try the ES Hamstring Flexibility Program and then later go to the Kicks Combo dvds. The best thing to do is to follow a program and Paul's programs are excellent. You will learn a lot as you go along. Your body is your best teacher as go from one level to a higher lever be it strengthening or flexibility. For now you continue with the Flexibility and Splits dvd. It's a great program to start with. Your questions will be answered as you progress. So train now and ask questions later. By the way I'm female, 51 years old and I can do splits and high kicks that I'm sure you will envy. Haha peace. Wish you luck!

P.S. I have the Flexibility DVD and the ES book but I concentrated on the book. I found it more convenient to use since I can do the exercises at my own pace. It doesn't take long to settle into the routine and do everything without turning the pages -). As a beginner I had to read it countless times to really understand the importance of all the moves and stretches. It helped me learn to feel my body. I was doing a regular workout before I started ES and when I got the book and the dvd I was so confused and didn't know how to integrate everything into my routine. Well I managed to squeeze everything into my weekly routine but had to start as early as 5 am -).

It's a mix of many muscles. Yes hamstring flexibillity is very important as is strength. Also you need to develop strength and flexibillity in the hip flexor, adductors, Abductors and mid section. The kicking series gives you the exact breakdown for each muscle used in each kick. as well as some great training drills targeting all areas of kicking.

If you want to isolate just flexibility, omit strength, balance and torso factors, here is the flexibility requirement for the height of the kick.

Front line kicks forward- kicking leg extensors, supporting leg flexors.
Front line kicks sideways-kicking leg extensors and addutors, supporting leg adductors
Side line kicks with correct turn out-supporting leg extensors and adductors, kicking legs adductors play only small role in most people.
